How to read Chinese on Internet.
If you do not have Chinese Windows and still want to read Chinese on Internet, you may install some softwares to help. We introduce two of them here : NjStar or Unionway AsianSuite97. For more information, please visit the following web sites.
http://www.njstar.com.au/ for NjStarNjStar let you to read Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Japanese and Korean. It is for Windows 95/NT. For downloading, click any download site in
ftp://sunsite.ust.hk/pub/simtelnet/win95/editor/njc410.zip
The following window will appear and you can choose [Save File], then you can put the
file njc410.zip in any directory in your computer.
(Note : There may be other versions for NjStar. please check in http://www.njstar.com.au/ )

The file njc410.zip is a compressed file and you need to decompress it after
downloading.
For decompression, you are recommended to download Winzip 6.2 form http://www.winzip.com which is easy to install,
just run winzip95.exe and keep clicking [Next] and that's it!
By double clicking njc410.zip and Winzip will start and you can see the files inside njc410.zip. Then you just click the [Extract] icon in the tool bar and you can decompress njc410.zip. You can now extract the files to a directory you like, then double click setup.exe and follow the instruction to install NjStar. You are recommended to choose [Full Install].
After set up, you can click [Start][Program][NJWIN Multilingual Support System] to start NjStar on Windows 95. After that, you can see the control panel of NjStar and you can choose by clicking the middle button.
To exit NjStar, just click the
character on the left of
the control panel.
Unionway supports Windows 3.1 as well as Windows 95/NT. You can use this as NjStar does not support Windows 3.1.
You can download AsianSuite97 from http://www.unionway.com and you can install it without the need for decompression. Remember, you must also write the down personal product ID (something like password)shown on web. The you can start it in the same way as NjStar.
Search Engines
Search Engine is one of the most powerful tool for WWW. It is just like the book searching program you use in the University Library. By enter the key word in the text box provided in the Search Engine page, and press Enter, all home page related to your key word will show on your screen.

There are many other search engines in different place of the world and are in different languages. However, they are usually very busy such that the web sites in the above table are difficult to visit. In order to visit the search engines easier, you can visit sites such as Hong Kong Star Internet: http://www.hkstar.com/ and Arts Faculty of CUHK:

which link directly to the search engines. Or you can just click Net Search button in Netscape, then you can use the search engines.
Using search engine is very easy, for example, you have visited:http://www.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/Gen.html , and you will find something like the following figure :
Suppose that you want to learn English, the you can type in learn English or learn + English in the text box provided, then click the Search button. That's it! Links to web sites about learning English will appear in Netscape.
However, you will find ten thousand links if you give the Engine a general word.
Learning to use Boolean Operators will help you to limit the search area. Boolean Operators are inserted between key words. They include AND, OR, NOT, NEAR, ADJ, + ( same to AND ), - ( same to NOT ), * (everything), $(everything), “ ” (whole sentence), ( ) (higher priority), upper and lower cases. For example, you want to find a star which is bright, just enter star AND bright. The table below shows some search engine providers and Boolean Operators they support.
