 Background

India was at the time of the first urbanization period when Buddhism emerged. The public gathered into cities and merchants became popular. At that time, the Buddha advocated the life ethics of “equality and autonomy” and “self-acting and self-responsibility” against the traditional Brahmin monopoly ethics of offering sacrifices to gods, which benefit the emerging social classes. These emerging classes were mainly engaged in various commercial activities. According to the “the Agama Sutra”: “Those who make a living, farm and trade merchants, herd cattle and sheep for profit, and house for profit.” They earned a living with their efforts, whatever it was from the harvest of farming and animal husbandry, or income from business, trade, investment, etc., were recognized by Buddhism.  Once people follow the teachings of Buddhism, people can incorporate Buddhism in the way of business, thus Buddhist businessmen can follow it when doing business Enterprises usually pursue for profit and the maximization of benefits. Therefore, Buddhist businessmen must have the Buddhist way beyond utilitarianism as a basis to follow, and transform the profits obtained into social welfare to achieve the maximum of the enterprise value.

Buddhism, with a history of more than 2,000 years, furnishes the business community with valuable resources; moreover, Buddhism has organized, systematic, and planned education, culture, charity, and spiritual practice, which not only continue the Buddha’s wisdom-life, but also promote social harmony and advancement. Therefore, the entrepreneurial spirit of Buddhism, as well as the essence of education and culture, are indeed a great treasure of mankind. With the continuous progress and proliferation of corporate civilization and business culture, is the Buddhist tradition of reciprocal giving sustainable? Conversely, what impact is the modern business model having on the operation of the Buddhist Sangha?

The Centre for the Study of Humanistic Buddhism of the CUHK and the Fo Guang Shan Institute of Humanistic Buddhism sincerely invite management scholars and eminent monks from monasteries and halls, to gather together for a forum themed on “Management Culture of Humanistic Buddhism”. In order to explore the relationship between the development of Buddhism and business activities, how Buddhism benefits business activities, how Buddhism helps people do business, how the management experience of the Sangha provides business management advice, and other issues.
