Dr. Cho’s research examines global Maoism and the localisation of Chinese thought and culture, with particular focus on how Chinese intellectual and cultural influences have continued to shape Japanese society in the modern and post-war periods. Different from the general view that ancient China had greater influence on Japan while modern influence flowed largely in the opposite direction, his work offers a comprehensive understanding of how the “China factor” has continued to shape modern and post-World-War-II Japanese society through culture, language, politics and intellectual history.

Dr. Cho has presented his research internationally in Chinese, English, and Japanese. His work has been published in prestigious journals, including The Global Sixties, Japanese Studies, China and Asia, Twenty-First Century, Thought and Words, and Journal of Art Studies, making important contributions to the study of Sino-Japanese relations, post-war Japanese intellectual history, global Maoism, Cold War studies, and related fields.
