The Faculty of Arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) warmly congratulates Ms Vivian Wing Wun Ip, alumna and lecturer in the Department of Music, on winning Third Prize at the 2025 International Ferenc Fricsay Conducting Competition in Hungary. Selected from more than 460 conductors worldwide, she is the first conductor from Hong Kong to receive an award in this competition, showcasing her exceptional artistry, leadership, and technical prowess.
Ms Ip graduated from CUHK’s Department of Music with first class Honours. With the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowship, she earned a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Indiana University Bloomington. She then earned a Magistra Artium in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, graduating with the institution’s highest award.
As a conductor from Hong Kong, Ms Ip takes great pride in her role. “To stand out among more than 460 conductors and win third place in this competition is an immense honour and fills me with gratitude,” she said. “I am incredibly proud to represent Hong Kong and to showcase the talent and hard work of Hong Kong musicians. I hope my success encourages more young people in Hong Kong to pursue their dreams boldly, without fearing difficulties, and stay true to their own paths.”
Ms Ip has collaborated with numerous European orchestras and local arts organisations, including the Hong Kong Arts Festival and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. She is currently the Associate Conductor of Hong Kong Sinfonietta, teaches Practical Studies in Musicianship and Choral Conducting at CUHK.
This achievement adds to the celebrations for the Department of Music’s 60th anniversary and showcases the department’s strong commitment in nurturing exceptional local musicians. The CUHK Faculty of Arts will, as always, provide a world-class teaching and research environment and will continue to support our community members in pursuing excellence on both local and international stages.
