The Faculty of Arts at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is delighted to announce that Professor Stuart McManus of the Department of History has been awarded the Collaborative Research Fund (CRF) Young Collaborative Research Grant (YCRG) for 2025/26, with a total award of HK$4.49 million.
Professor McManus’s project titled “Cross-Cultural Analytics: Using Big Data, Large Language Models, Knowledge Graphs and Rare Books to Chart the Influence of Chinese Culture in the West, 1550-1900”, aims to establish Hong Kong as a leading global centre for Cross-Cultural Analytics, an emerging field at the intersection of data science and cultural studies. Focusing on the influence of Chinese culture on Europe and the Americas between 1550 and 1900, the project will apply large-scale data analysis to historical texts and translations using advanced Natural Language Processing techniques, including Large Language Models and Knowledge Graphs. Leveraging CUHK’s exceptional rare book collections alongside major public-domain resources, the team will develop a high-quality textual corpus for intertextual analysis. In the long term, the project envisions the establishment of a permanent Cross-Cultural Analytics research centre at CUHK to advance international collaboration and postgraduate training.
Reflecting on the award, Professor McManus expressed his gratitude for the YCRG funding and his enthusiasm for building the Cross-Cultural Analytics Lab in the years ahead. He also extended his sincere thanks to the Faculty, his Department, and his CUHK Co‑Principal investigators and collaborators for their invaluable support in preparing the proposal.
The Faculty warmly congratulates Professor McManus and his team on securing this prestigious grant and wishes them every success in advancing this visionary research initiative.
