The Faculty of Arts is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Wu Jiang as Sarina and Ho Pak Kong Professor of Buddhist Studies in the new academic year. An internationally distinguished scholar of Buddhism and East Asian intellectual history, Professor Wu joins The Chinese University of Hong Kong with an outstanding record of research, teaching, and academic leadership.
Professor Wu’s research explores how religious ideas, texts, and cultural traditions have shaped societies across China, Japan, and the broader East Asian world. Combining rigorous philological scholarship with innovative methodologies, his work integrates Buddhist studies, textual criticism, book history, digital humanities, and spatial analysis (GIS) to investigate the historical formation of Buddhist knowledge in East Asia.
Professor Wu received his Ph.D. from Harvard University and served as Director of the Center for Buddhist Studies at the University of Arizona for many years before joining CUHK. He was a Guggenheim Fellow and most recently a Regents Professor at the University of Arizona.
Professor Wu’s appointment marks an exciting new chapter for the study of Buddhism at CUHK. We look forward to his many contributions in teaching, research, academic leadership, and international scholarly exchange in the years ahead.
