Accommodation

The deadline for housing application is 6 April 2016. Some housing--the university guesthouse in particular--is scarce, and so participants may wish to apply well ahead of this date.

Once we receive the housing application form, we will make a reservation for you. We cannot promise the availability of a given accommodation since the supply is limited. However, if there is a problem, we will consult with you about alternative accommodations.

After your reservation is confirmed, we will send you a confirmation. You will have to pay for your accommodation via our payment system on or before 6 May 2016. If we have not received your payment by that time, we will cancel your reservation.

Please inform us 3 weeks prior to your check-in date if you need to cancel the booking, or else you will be fully responsible for the penalties incurred.

There are four options for housing at the conference. It is assumed that you seek a room for yourself only. If you would like to share a room with someone of your choosing or of our choosing, let us know.

One option is the undergraduate student dormitories. As they are student dormitories, the rooms themselves are fairly spartan, with bathrooms shared. Sheets and pillowcases are provided, but not towels; there is no private television; internet access can be arranged by registering with the university during your first day on campus. The charge per night per person as of last year was HK$125 (~US$16.0). New rates will be announced in late March, and so the price may be slightly higher. Please note that participants of different sex staying in the same room/floor are strictly prohibited, not by us but by the dormitory management in the university. Participants may stay extra nights in the dormitory before and after the conference if you inform us in advance.

There are also a limited number of University Guesthouse rooms available on campus. They are comparable to private hotel rooms. These rooms, at Chan Kwan Tung Building, are relatively convenient to the conference site, requiring a five-minute uphill walk from the conference site. The quota for single rooms (HK$530/~US$67.9 per night per room*) and superior rooms (HK$630/~US$80.8 per night per room*) is full. 11 twin rooms are still available for application, at HK$570 (~US$72.2)* per room per night. There is also 1 superior room (HK$630/~US$80.8 per night per room*) available for application. These rooms are relatively modest, but have private bathrooms, telephones, and televisions, in the usual hotel-room style. It is expected that these rooms will be in considerable demand, so please apply to us as early as possible. Normal check-in time is 13:00, and check-out time is 12:00 noon.

(*Please note that the University guesthouse has cancelled the provision of breakfast and hence lowered the room rate.)

There is also the Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Sha Tin, a deluxe nearby hotel. These hotel rooms will cost HK$1140‒1260 (~US$146.2‒161.5) per room per night, plus 10% service charge. This price may vary, we are told. The Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Sha Tin is a 5 Star luxury hotel located next to the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the University MTR Station. Participants can take a ten-minute walk to the conference location. In order to obtain our departmental discount, included in the price mentioned above, please register through us in order to reserve your room. The check-in time is 14:00 and check-out time is 12:00 noon.

Conference participants may also stay in Chungking Mansions, Tsim Sha Tsui if they wish. Chungking Mansions is a center of “low-end globalization” in Hong Kong and probably the most international building in the world; it’s a fascinating place to stay, although the rooms are small. The price will be roughly HK$250 (~US$32.1) per night for a single room with individual bathroom. Chungking Mansions is a 30-minute train ride to CUHK, followed by a ten-minute walk to the SEAA conference site. If there are a sufficient number of people who seek to stay in Chungking Mansions, we will arrange a bus to and from CUHK.
