To mark the 600th anniversary of the Forbidden City in 2000 and ride on the successful launch of the Traversing the Forbidden City – Architecture and Craftsmanship exhibition in 2019, the Art Promotion Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has collaborated with the Department of Fine Arts of The Chinese University of Hong Kong to present the online exhibition The Common Folks behind the Vermilion Walls. The online exhibition spotlights the lesser-known inhabitants of the Forbidden City, their duties and expertise. It offers a glimpse into the world of the ordinary people in the imperial palace so as to discover countless treasures in the Forbidden City.

The series will launch three other online exhibitions from next year to 2023, namely Sentiment and Sensibility behind the Vermilion WallsThe Masterpieces behind the Vermilion Walls and Reckoning in Lives behind the Vermilion Walls. The exhibitions will introduce the Forbidden City from an array of aspects and different stories, connecting our everyday lives.
