“The Art of CUHK 2026” Phase I Opening Ceremony

Held annually in early summer, “The Art of CUHK” exhibition is curated by the students from the Department of Fine Arts, which showcases their artistic creations to the public. “The Art of CUHK 2026” is presented by the Department of Fine Arts and co-organized by The Office of the Arts Administrator. It is divided into two phases: Phase I features the Undergraduate (B.A.) Graduation Exhibition, the Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) Graduation Exhibition, and the Annual Exhibition, which will be held from 31 May to 21 June this year. Phase II consists of the Master of Arts in Fine Arts (M.A.F.A.) Graduation Exhibition (Contemporary Art Practice Stream & Chinese Art Practice Stream), and the M.A. Year-one Exhibition, held from 5 July to 8 August. “The Art of CUHK” aims to feature the achievements of our Fine Arts students, which celebrate the possibilities and diversity of art.
The 2026 B.A. Graduation Exhibition, entitled “Glide Across the Mist,” was inspired by the view from a late-night flight. The concept suggests that despite the sheltering darkness of the sky during the journey, the plane will eventually cross the dawn mist and land illuminated by the rising sun. Similarly, these thirty-two graduates’ artistic journeys are like that late-night flight; each will encounter their own difficulties and discoveries along the way. Holding the deepest sincerity and hope, they can bravely walk toward their ideal destinations. Thus, the graduates boarded the late-night flight heedless of the consequences, with the promise that one day they will gather again and share the stories of their growth under the sunlit sky.
Simultaneously, the works of two M.F.A. graduating students will also be showcased in diverse ways: LI Hiuwa and KONG Chun Hei share an interest in the interplay between medium and content. LI’s works examine photography’s enduring role as a documentary tool through the process of image generation, which interacts with the medium and site, while exploring how the viewer’s gaze can be prolonged by images amidst the rapidly disseminated digital age. KONG’s practice extracts patterns corresponding to the structure of daily objects, which reveals the disjunction between objects and their contextual operations. By extending the concepts across drawings, ready-made installations, and video works, the tension between reinforcement and cancellation across diverse forms can be shown. LI and KONG’s works, coupled with the outcomes of their studies, will be showcased in the graduation show.
