About
Wong Chun-wai is a composer deeply committed to musical craftsmanship, creating thoughtful and refined works across a broad spectrum of styles. His versatile oeuvre encompasses concert music, musicals, and film scores. True to his cultural upbringing, he often blends diverse musical languages, at times evoking vivid atmospheres and offering audiences an experience akin to multimedia art. Rooted in the (Late) Romantic tradition, his works in recent years explore how contemporary ideas can extend that lineage in a modern context.
His award-winning compositions have been featured at prestigious international events, including the International Rostrum of Composers, ISCM World Music Days, Asian Composers League Festival, and Asian Youth Orchestra World Tour. They are published by PARMA Recordings, Ablaze Records (United States), Europa Musica Publishing (France), and others. His music has been performed and recorded by leading ensembles and artists, such as the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (under Jaap van Zweden, Bright Sheng, Sebastian Perłowski, Lio Kuokman and Gerard Salonga), Internationale Ensemble Modern Akademie, members of the New York Philharmonic, and soloists including Dong-Suk Kang and Jan-Erik Gustafsson. Notably, maestro Jaap van Zweden commissioned a Double Concerto from Wong for the conductor's 60th birthday.
Wong's film scores have been showcased at festivals such as the Sound and Image Challenge International Festival and the Pink City International Short Film Festival. His arrangements have been performed by orchestras across continents and featured by renowned artists and ensembles, including Nick Vujicic, Rebecca Pan Di-hua and Harry Wong.
He holds a Doctor of Music in Composition from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), a second doctorate from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University Bloomington (IU) (with a minor in Music Theory), and a Professional Diploma in Performing Arts (Music) from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
Wong has previously taught at The Hong Kong Baptist University and IU, and he currently serves as a Lecturer at CUHK. In addition to his university teaching, he has also taught HKDSE Music (Creating) at various schools and centers.
