Welcome to the Faculty of Arts at CUHK!
Beginning over 60 years ago with literary, historical and philosophical studies as its core disciplines, our Faculty now consists of 11 academic departments ranging from Anthropology to Translation, from Fine Arts to Music, along with an interdisciplinary Centre for China Studies. Many of our disciplines and subject areas are ranked among the best in the region, across Asia, even in the world. Today, we are a dynamic, diverse scholarly community with about 4,500 undergraduate and postgraduate students in pursuit of excellence in bilingual teaching and learning in the humanities.
Earlier in 2026, we were pleased once again that The U.S. News and World Report ranked CUHK as the 9th Best Global University for Arts and Humanities in the world, even higher than a year before. The QS University Ranking, in the meantime, placed CUHK Arts and Humanities as the 40th globally. Both rankings continue an upward trend in recognition of humanities education and research at CUHK.
A good illustration of our commitment to innovative humanities education is the successful launch of the BA Programme in Public Humanities in 2025-26. The first of its kind in Asia, the BA in Public Humanities seeks to “nurture a new generation of cultural mediators, producers, and professionals to meet the needs and challenges of contemporary society”.
We will soon introduce an MA Programme in AI Humanities, with its first cohort scheduled to arrive in the Fall Term of 2027. Drawing on intellectual resources from across the entire Faculty, this distinctive MA programme will integrate humanities training with the exciting possibilities brought by artificial intelligence and explore new frontiers.
In the coming years, we will align the Faculty’s development with the CUHK 2026-2030 Strategic Plan in order to advance further the University’s founding mission and global standing. We will continue to strive for academic excellence while helping nurture creative and responsible global citizens for a changing world.
A humanities education is indispensable, I believe, to a firm grasp of the richness of human history as well as to the possibility of a shared and desirable future. It is a foundational education that equips us to better tackle complex and challenging issues we face in today’s world, from climate change to technological advancement to geopolitical shifts.
As Dean, I will lead and coordinate our efforts to achieve the goals we set for ourselves. I invite all of you to join us in our endeavour to make our Faculty ever more Global, Innovative, and Inspirational.
