Teaching and Learning

CUHK ARTS is the largest Faculty dedicated to humanities research and education in Hong Kong.

With around 300 professors and lecturers, the Faculty helps train not only new generations of scholars in different fields, but also imaginative learners and responsible citizens of society.

Undergraduate Curriculum

Our 16 undergraduate major programmes encourage students to pursue not only a specialized or professional discipline, but also to gain an educational experience that will serve to enhance their capacity for life-long learning and competitiveness in the working life.

Academic and Teaching Units

Established in 1980, the department offers the only undergraduate programmes in anthropology and archaeology in Hong Kong and has grown into an internationally recognized centre for the study of culture and society in Hong Kong, mainland China, and Asia.

Placing dual emphases on studio art and art history, the department explores contemporary art while promoting traditional Chinese art and culture. As the first tertiary institute to offer visual arts education in Hong Kong, it has trained generations of local artists, art historians and art professionals.

Previously known as the Japanese Studies Section, the department was established in 1967 offering minor and elective courses. Since 1991, it has developed into a comprehensive programme providing undergraduate and postgraduate training in Japanese studies and language.

The department has provided practical and academic training in both Chinese and Western music for more than 50 years. Apart from a BA in Music, it also offers MA, MMus, DMus, MPhil, and PhD programmes.

Established in 1972, the department was the first of its kind in Asia. The Department offers BA, MA, MPhil, and PhD programmes covering the history, theory, and practice of translation between Chinese and English.

Students in the Faculty are provided the opportunities to develop a global perspective and explore different cultures by participating in exchange programmes overseas and internship programmes.

Academic Advising

In order to support students’ academic development as part of the whole student support and pastoral care system, the University established the Academic Advising System.

Good teachers strive to find new ways to expand their instructional repertoire and engage their students. A variety of grants are available for teachers seeking professional development.

  • Dean's List

    The Dean’s List is to recognise the academic excellence of our students. Undergraduate students in the top 10% and having an overall GPA of 3.50 or above are eligible to be put on the Dean’s List. For taught postgraduate students to be named on the Dean’s List, they should be in the top 20% and have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.60 or above.

    It is of the utmost importance that our students receive a high-quality learning experience. We acknowledge and reward teachers who demonstrate excellence in the classroom, as well as nurture and share best teaching practices to benefit even more students.
