About the Brown-CUHK Summer Institute

Brown-CUHK Summer Institute is a joint initiative of the Brown University, USA and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and an extension of academic collaboration between the two universities.

Theme and Objective of the Programme
Cultural Heritage Preservation and Management Strategies
Hong Kong and New England

The focus of the 2011 BCSI is to cultivate a cross-cultural perspective in the Humanities against the backdrop of globalization, by inviting participants to explore:

the different historical background and heritage of the two cities;
the significance of this heritage within their contexts; and
the economic, social and political implications of their heritage conservation strategies

Participants in BCSI 2011 will acquire broad intellectual perspectives and develop sensitivity to the common concerns of human existence with an emphasis on issues such as cultural identity, urban development, gender, and social policy. They will be equipped with the theoretical framework and firsthand experience to immerse, trace, explore and compare, from an interdisciplinary perspective, the context of the historical and cultural heritage of Hong Kong and New England. They will be able to form their own judgments and values, by critical analyses of open-ended topics like changing values, housing controversies, and the different effects of economic development between the two cities.
