Why did you choose Translation at CUHK Faculty of Arts?
The Department of Translation at CUHK has a rich history in the field in Hong Kong and has a good reputation for conducting research in Translation Studies. They also provide quality translation training for those who are interested in pursuing a career as a translator.
What did you enjoy most at CUHK when studying Translation?
The bonding between teachers and students is close. Most of the teachers in the Department of Translation are very friendly and willing to support students in terms of academic pursuit and personal growth.
Can you tell us your most valuable memories of studying Translation?
Having the chance to meet companions who share similar passions and interest is the best thing I have as a CUHK translation student.
How your education prepared you for your career?
At the later stage of my undergraduate study, I developed my interest in doing research in academia. The courses offered by the department allow me to equip with the basic skills of conducting academic research and prepare myself for further study upon graduation.
What is your current role?
I am doing a master’s degree in Comparative Literature at UCL currently. After my BA graduation, I worked as a research assistant in the department for a year and I had a great experience working with the professors. Inspired by the teachers in the Translation Department, I would like to further enrich my knowledge in the field of humanities, and that’s why I decided to go further study in the UK.
Where do you see yourself in the future?
My goal is to work as a professional researcher and scholar in academia. Upon graduation from my master’s programme, I would seek opportunities for a PhD degree in order to get closer to my career goal.
From your experience, what has been the value of having an Arts degree?
Knowing thyself might be the most precious thing I gain as an Art student. I believe the value of humanity training is in inspiring one’s mind. Besides, skills, like critical thinking, and communication skills are highly transferrable, even in the business setting.
What advice would you give to our students?
Always read and reflect. The more you read, the more confident you will be. It is always good to discuss and talk to people about your thoughts very often, you will find something worth learning from others as well.
