Professor Jing HAN
Professor Jing HAN is the Director of Institute for Australia and Chinese Arts and Culture (IAC) and Professor of translation and interpreting in the School of Humanities and Communication Arts at WSU. She has taught all units in its flagship translation and interpreting program. She has designed and been teaching audiovisual translation and literary translation to postgraduate students and is currently the principal supervisor of five PhD candidates. Professor Han is also a published literary translator who translated a modern Chinese classic Educated Youth by award winning author Ye Xin, published in Australia in 2016 and her Chinese translation of the Miles Franklin Award winning novel Too Much Lip by Melissa Lucashenko was published by China Writers Publishing House in 2021. She is currently translating Where They Lie, a literary thriller by the award-winning Irish writer Claire Coughlan. The Chinese translation is to be published by China Writers Publishing House in 2024.
Subtitling is a highly specialised craft. It is quite different from standard textual translation. The mission of the subtitler is to render speech into a reading format on a visual medium. The transmission is from the source language to the target language and the source culture to the target culture.
Professor Jing HAN, who has subtitled over 300 Chinese films and documentaries in the last 23 years, will unpack the intriguing process of negotiation and manipulation in reining in the cultural and linguistic differences and transforming them into a shape and form recognisable to and accessible by the English speaking audience. She will use some telling examples from the films and TV programs she has subtitled to illustrate creative solutions in subtitling.
