As one of the three CUHK scholars, Professor Pang Lai-kwan, Choh-Ming Li Professor of Cultural and Religious Studies in the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies, has been conferred the title of “RGC Senior Research Fellow” and awarded a fellowship grant of about HK$8.2 million under the 2025/26 RGC Senior Research Fellow Scheme (SRFS) for her project “An Interdisciplinary Approach to Explore the Rise of the Modern Chinese Subject in Late Qing China”.
Professor Pang shared, “This project explores the formation of a modern subject in Late-Qing and Early-Republican China, a period marked by significant anxiety, curiosity, and uncertainty. It studies a wide range of intellectual writings from leading thinkers of the time, everyday life of ordinary people, and current geopolitics on the international stage. It also combines intellectual, social, and cultural history to analyse the interactions among various forces and actors within China and globally. I am fortunate to be able to conduct this interdisciplinary research in the Faculty of Arts at CUHK, which, in my view, offers the most vibrant and comprehensive Humanities research environment in Hong Kong. I hope to continue engaging with colleagues across different departments in the Faculty to make this project truly innovative and path-breaking.”
The Faculty of Arts warmly congratulates Professor Pang on receiving this distinguished award and acknowledges her outstanding research contributions. We look forward to our scholars achieving further breakthroughs in their respective fields, continuing to conduct transformative research in the humanities, and advancing human knowledge.
