The Faculty is pleased to announce that Professor Peggy Mok Pik-ki from the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages was awarded a grant of HK$999,800 in the 2025/26 Research Grants Council (RGC) Humanities and Social Sciences Prestigious Fellowship Scheme (HSSPFS), for her project titled “The Mental Representation of Tone Sandhi.” HSSPFS is highly competitive, with a maximum of only 10 fellowships awarded each year.
Professor Mok shared, “I am humbly honoured to be awarded the HSSPFS for 2025/26. This project builds on my previous GRF project on the acquisition of complex tone sandhi by children and extends the investigation to the mental representation of tone sandhi. Tone sandhi is a robust feature of many Chinese dialects with diverse patterns. My research makes use of data from several distinct Chinese dialects differing in tone sandhi complexities, hoping to enrich our understanding of mental representation and mechanisms of both simple and complex phonological patterns. I am grateful for the generous funding provided by RGC for me to focus on this important line of research.”
Congratulations to Professor Mok for achieving excellent results in the HSSPFS. The Faculty remains fully committed to supporting faculty members in their diverse research endeavours and fostering contributions that enrich society through impactful knowledge transfer.
