The second phase of “The Art of CUHK 2025” exhibition is curated by the Master of Arts Programme in Fine Arts (M.A.F.A.) students from the Department of Fine Arts, showcasing the works of graduating and first-year classes for both the Contemporary Art Practice stream and the Chinese Art Practice stream.  Split into four different sections based on the different classes, the works of Phase 2 reflect the diverse multidisciplinary nature of the M.A.F.A. programme.  Being held from July 7 to 27 (opening ceremony on July 6 at the foyer of Sir Run Run Shaw Hall), the graduating classes’ exhibitions “Adventitious” by the Contemporary Art Practice Stream and “Petals in Ink” by the Chinese Art Practice Stream are located on the 3/F and 2/F of Cheng Ming Building respectively, while the first year’s exhibitions “Liminality: Exploring Paradoxes” for Contemporary Art and “Gaze Upon the Vast Universe” for Chinese Art are located at the Hui Gallery and the foyer of Sir Run Run Shaw Hall, respectively.  Our M.A.F.A. students come from a wide range of academic and occupational backgrounds, the artworks presented encompass a multitude of different mediums, themes and practices.  Exploring ideas that range from the changing boundaries within society, to the natural order of the cosmos, the M.A.F.A. exhibition blurs the line between the traditional and the contemporary, providing a unique perspective that conforms and challenges the conventions of fine art practice.

Adventitious

In a society undergoing significant changes, the space for identity recognition is being compressed, leading us to feel anxious. How should we perceive this moment?  15 artists born in this era have been on a creative journey, striving to find their own foothold.  Through observing and exploring the gaps of this era, they use their artistic creations to fill those voids, providing solace for souls.  Their creations not only respond to the present reality but also hopes for the future.  It is hoped that the audience can follow in the artists’ footsteps and witness, through the exhibition “Adventitious”, this journey of finding strength amidst chaos.  Through these works, we can find a touch of comfort and inspiration in this ever-changing era.

Liminality: Exploring Paradoxes

Where light meets shadow, silence intertwines with sound, and certainty dances with doubt, we discover that understanding often resides with a paradoxical harmony.  “Liminality” invites viewers to contemplate the paradoxes that shape our realities, exploring the transitory states and spaces of our existence, and reflecting upon the thresholds of our shared experience.  Each piece of this exhibition challenges conventional boundaries, revealing the beauty in contradictions, as well as reflecting the personal transformations within our academic journey.  Through an array of mediums, we explore the balance of light and shadow, the duality of existence, and the tension of uncertainty.  As we navigate these liminal spaces alongside these artists in development, we confront the inbetweenness of life, and therefore encourage a dialogue on transition, identity, and the ephemeral nature of truth.

Gaze Upon the Vast Universe

1672 years ago, Wang Xizhi wrote “The Preface of Orchid Pavilion”, which was a preface wrote at a poets’ gathering, composing and collecting poems.  Contemplating on how in spite of life’s great moment of birth and death, one is inspired by the past; and this very present, can inspire the future through the article.  Three years ago, while gazing down at earth from the International Space Station, Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti, echoed Wang Xizhi’s wisdom, stating, “Gaze upon the vast universe and its diverse wonders; such a delight to open up oneself, and enjoy the pleasure of sight and sound to the greatest extend.”  As Ch’ien Mu, the founder of New Asia College and the Fine Arts Specialized Training Programme (the predecessor of the Department of Fine Arts), reminded us of the pursuit of knowledge must be matched by the cultivation of character.  Embracing such belief, 21 of us are eager to embark on our journey of exploration.  This July 2025 at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall, CUHK, we would like to share our fruits of our year-long studies in the Department of Fine Arts in a poetic manner. Together, we shall all behold the great literacy thought’s, gaze upon the vast universe and dive into meaningful dialogues, and intertwine our thoughts.
