Organized by the Department of Fine Arts at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Attic Lab is a student-led project and an extension of a contemporary art studio course. Located on the 14th floor of the Spark City Mongkok, this public art project brings together art creation, workshops, and exhibitions. Its purpose is to create a platform inspired by community observation and learning that gives back to the community. Undergraduate students from the fine arts department will share their attempts and results combining theory and artistic practice through various approaches such as field research, interviews, media experiments, workshop facilitation, artwork and exhibition curation.

In public spaces, can we fully unleash our imagination, what are the constraints? Does the community truly need the intervention of artists? Is it impossible to delve deeper into an area without genuine interaction with local people? How do we define the impact of “stepping out of our comfort zone” on artistic creation? What factors make collaboration difficult in art cooperation? How do interpersonal relationships established and developed in community art affect the creative process? How do we define the success of community art?

Through this project, we hope to address the above questions posed by students and explore different aspects and approaches to community participatory art creation.
