“The Art of CUHK 2025” Phase I Opening Ceremony
Date: June 1, 2025 (Sunday)
Time: 3 PM
Venue: Hui Kwok Hau Hall, Mei Yun Tang, New Asia College, CUHK
Held annually in early summer, “The Art of CUHK” exhibition is curated by the students from the Department of Fine Arts, showcasing their artistic creations to the public. “The Art of CUHK 2025” is presented by the Department of Fine Arts and co-organized by the Office of the Arts Administrator. The exhibition is divided into two phases: Phase 1 features the Undergraduate (B.A.) Graduation Exhibition, the Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) Graduation Exhibition, and the Annual Exhibition (together with the M.F.A. Year-one Display), which will be held from June 2 to 22 this year. Phase 2 consists of the Master of Arts (M.A.) in Fine Arts Graduation Exhibition (Contemporary Art Stream & Chinese Art Stream), and the M.A Year-one Exhibition, held from July 7 to 27. “The Art of CUHK” aims to highlight the achievements of our Fine Arts students, celebrating the possibilities and diversity of art.
The 2025 B.A. Graduation Exhibition, entitled “Drop Me Off at the Rear,” presents a contrast to the common phrase “drop me off ahead,” used by passengers to signal drivers when they intend to disembark at the upcoming stop. We cannot foresee places we have yet to reach, nor can we incorporate the unknown into our destination. Yet, since “choices” must precede “experiences,” raising “drop me off ahead” must precede the actual moment of arrival. If a passenger misses their stop and urgently needs to reclaim that moment, they can only call out, “DROP ME OFF AT THE REAR!” In this exhibition, 28 graduating artists embody this tension, navigating the yearning for the unknown and the intuition about what lies ahead. By transforming their thoughts into experiences, they render invisible destinations tangible, and collectively embark on a journey that confronts conventions or offers paths to escape.
Simultaneously, the works of four M.F.A. graduating students will also showcase their creative works in diverse ways: FUNG Yee-tin, Thomas, reinterprets the 1990s to the millennium’s government TV advertisements through paintings, with provocative imagery to challenge the audience’s perception of events. LAM Kwok-yam, Aaron, employs video and object materials to narrate fragmented memories and individual stories from a first-person perspective, creating layered landscapes where events, memories, and imagination converge; LUI Yan Yi, Mindy, explores the relationship between artificial objects and the fleeting moments of life through post-production images and videos, cantering on the concepts of “disappearance” and “absence.” TAN Benxi recreates the marginal landscapes of southern cities through imagery, juxtaposing the perspectives of the future and the past to form an intertwined observational path, and contemplating the possibilities of imagery carrying reality.
The Annual Exhibition comprises an Artwork Exhibition, an Outdoor Art Exhibition and the M.F.A. Year-one Display. The exhibited works are selected from open submissions across the Department and are displayed at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall and International House 4; approximately 60 works will be displayed in total. The M.F.A. Year-one Display will take place at the New Asia College Ch’ien Mu Library, presenting works by two M.F.A. students, KONG Chun Hei and LI Hiuwa. Their works explore contemporary society through themes such as the misplacement of object, the limits of medium, temporality of images, responding to their own states.
