Introduction

"Zong Jing Lu" is a very important work in the history of Buddhism in East Asia. It was written by Yongming Yanshou (904-976), a Chan monk in the Five Dynasties period, with a total of 100 vo-lumes. Yanshou takes “one heart taught under Chan” as the core principle and governs all the thoughts and practices of Buddhism in the past period. In the Song Dynasty, "Zong Jing Lu" was re-cognized as the orthodox doctrine of Buddhism and included in the Tibetan Tripitaka. It not only had a profound impact on the future generations of China, but also on Buddhism in Korea and Japan. This lecture will briefly introduce the ideological content of “Zong Jing Lu" and its different acceptance in China, North Korea, and Japan, and then discuss the role of "Zong Jing Lu" in the process of the prosperity of Chan in China.
