Content Introduction:

On February 5, 2023, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the founding patriarch of Fo Guang Shan, passed away peacefully, leaving the world without its guiding light and plunging the Fourfold Assembly into grief. To honor the master’s lifelong dedication to promoting Humanistic Buddhism, the center hosted a global Buddhist scholars’ memorial symposium, “In Praise and Remembrance of Venerable Master Hsing Yun,” on March 5 of the same year. The event brought together scholars from around the world to reflect on and discuss the master’s philosophy and legacy.

Building upon the profound insights shared at the symposium, the center compiled the participants’ speeches and papers into this volume, titled Eternal Flame of Compassion: Honoring Master Hsing Yun and the Legacy of the Sacred Light. Edited by Prof. Chen Chien Huang, director of the center, the book features contributions from over twenty renowned scholars, including Prof. Lawrence J. Lau, former vice-chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prof. Wang Zhiyuan, and Prof. Huang Xianian. Their writings cover Master Hsing Yun’s life, philosophy, educational vision, cultural contributions, global perspective, and his profound impact on the modernization of Han Chinese Buddhism.

This commemorative collection brings together a diverse range of perspectives. Some essays vividly depict the master’s daily conduct and discipline; others delve into the essence of his teachings, analyzing how he integrated ancient and modern thought, bridged Eastern and Western cultures, and revitalized Han Chinese Buddhism in the contemporary world. Several groundbreaking papers explore the master’s achievements in education, culture, and philanthropy, offering fresh perspectives on the multifaceted relationship between Buddhism and modern society. These writings not only pay tribute to Master Hsing Yun but also carry forward his legacy, embodying the boundless gratitude and reverence felt by all who knew him.
