Marie Poon Sze-ling, our 2025 graduate from the Department of English, has demonstrated remarkable academic excellence and unwavering commitment throughout her studies at CUHK. As a hearing-impaired student, Marie has faced challenges with resilience and determination, earning numerous scholarships and awards in recognition of her outstanding achievements and contributions, including the Endeavour Merit Award from the HKSAR Government, the AIG Hong Kong Scholarship, and repeated inclusion on the Wu Yee Sun College Master’s List. Most recently, she has been awarded the prestigious Sir Edward Youde Memorial Scholarship (for disabled students) for 2025/26.
Marie’s academic journey has been deeply enriched by CUHK and the Faculty’s interdisciplinary approach, allowing her to explore diverse fields such as linguistics, social work, and history. Taking a course on Deaf culture broadened her understanding of the Deaf community’s vibrant culture as well as the systemic challenges they face, including institutional discrimination and inadequate educational support for students with special educational needs (SEN) in Hong Kong.
Her experience as a hearing-impaired student gives her unique insight into these barriers. This motivates her advocacy for equitable education and meaningful accommodations for Deaf individuals, which she believes are fundamental rights rather than privileges. Marie acknowledges the vital support she received from the Centre for Sign Linguistics and Deaf Studies and her lecturer, who patiently guided her introduction to Deaf culture and sign language, fostering her connection with the community.
Looking ahead, Marie plans to pursue a master’s degree in Developmental Linguistics at the University of Edinburgh, focusing on sign linguistics and language acquisition among Deaf children. She aims to develop effective teaching strategies that support Deaf children’s language development and promote inclusive education policies in Hong Kong, empowering Deaf individuals to fully participate in society and thrive on equal footing.
The Faculty of Arts congratulates Marie on her impressive accomplishments and dedication. Her passion for advocacy and academic excellence inspires us all to work towards a more inclusive and equitable future both within and beyond the campus.
