CUHK Faculty of Arts extends heartfelt congratulations to Professor Christina Cheung from the Department of Anthropology, Dr. Jimmy Fok Yeung-yueng from the Department of History and Professor Franz Mang Fan-lun from the Department of Philosophy for receiving the SCGE Exemplary Teaching Award in General Education 2024.
Sharing from Professor Christina Cheung, Department of Anthropology:
I have thoroughly enjoyed interacting with students while teaching at CUHK. As an educator, I am continually developing and refining my teaching skills and pedagogical approaches. While I teach archaeology and biological, I have gain valuable insights from my students as well as colleagues. I look forward to furthering my growth as an educator, refining my methods, and fostering an engaging and dynamic learning environment that encourages curiosity and collaboration.
Sharing from Dr. Jimmy Fok Yeung-yeung, Department of History:
From my point of view, university general education aims to help students become part of the community and the global society, understand their capacities and limitations, and consider how they can contribute to others. I believe that “the most powerful thing is not showing how powerful you are; instead, it is empowering the powerless in the most powerful way we can.”
Sharing from Professor Franz Mang Fan-lun, Department of Philosophy:
We are not machines. As teachers, we can care about how students think and feel. Students, in turn, can discuss, reflect, write by hand, and share laughter in class. These experiences help them better understand themselves and others, and truly live. In the era of artificial intelligence, CUHK’s general education may be more important than ever.
The Faculty is committed to support our academic staff in their pursuit of teaching and research excellence. We are dedicated to inspiring and nurturing future generations of scholars by fostering critical thinking and upholding the humanistic spirit. Once again, congratulations to our award-winning teachers for their exemplary contributions to the vibrant academic community of the University and the Faculty of Arts.
