Content

My thesis examines the strategies an artist employed in forming and maintaining social networks and how an artist’s artistic style is influenced by the social networks that he/ she actively and continuously constructed.

Through a case study of the life of Gao Jianfu (1879-1951), a native of Guangdong, and a key figure in what is usually termed “The Lingnan School”, my thesis examines the strategies an artist employed in forming and maintaining social networks and how an artist’s artistic style is influenced by the social networks that he/ she actively and continuously constructed. It will investigate how in his struggle between being the traditionalist and reformer, Gao Jianfu created his public image and identity with his works of art, and negotiated his position in the field using the social networks he formed.
