This study focuses on the time period of 420-589 CE, the era of Southern and Northern Dynasties, during which Buddhist art flourished in north China. Echoing Nanjing, Sichuan yields most of the significant findings on Buddhist art of upper Yangtze region. Status and Steles were excavated in different periods from the late nineteenth century to modern days in Chengdu and its vicinities, and there were more unpublished ones came out in recent years. This study aims to provide fresh scrutiny of the artistic origin, depicted objects, and religious concepts reflect by Buddhist art of upper Yangtze in the fifth and sixth centuries.
