Introduction

The development of Humanistic Buddhism in Malaysia (Malaya) began in the early 20th century. However, lacking in an advantageous environment and foundation in the early stage, it could not develop systematically. At that time, Master Taixu’s two visits started to sow good karma, followed by short stays of Master Fafang, Master Cihang, and Master Yanpei, which also contributed to the spread and development of Humanistic Buddhism in Malaya. The systematic dissemination and development of Humanistic Buddhism was not officially started until Master Zhumo went south to Penang and settled there.

After independence, many Malaysians monks studied in Taiwan. As well as the influence of Taiwan's transnational Buddhist community, Humanistic Buddhism has formed a diverse phenomenon in Malaysia. They discussed and learnt from each other, creating an excellent development environment. Therefore, Humanistic Buddhism in Malaysia has made very important contributions since the arrival of Master Taixu and his students. Through the joint efforts of Master Zhu Mo and other monks and laymen, the thought of Humanistic Buddhism has finally become one of the main leading thoughts in the development of Malaysian Buddhism.
