Venue: Gallery 1, Art Museum, Central Campus, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Date: July 15 – July 29, 2023

The Department of Fine Arts of the Chinese University of Hong Kong is delighted to
present 5354 – the Master of Arts in Fine Arts Program Graduate Exhibition from 15th
July to 29 July 2023 in the Art Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
The theme of the exhibition is 5354. 5354 in Cantonese is a homophonic pun meaning
both ambiguous state (neither three nor four) and enlightenment (on life and death).
“5354” is a metaphor for a state of ambiguity, as if we are stumbling between
bewilderment and enlightenment, faltering in our search for answers to life and death.
The exhibition will showcase the works of our 18 graduates. Our graduates came from
different walks of life with their own life story and experiences. During these two years,
they have inspired each other in art and in life during the discussions with teachers and
other classmates, and this exhibition will show the result of their growth through their
artworks.

“Seek, Ink, Image” – Master of Arts in Fine Arts Year One Exhibition (Chinese Art Practice)

Venue: Hui Gallery, New Asia College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Date: Aug 12 – 26, 2023

Featuring artworks from 14 master students of the Chinese Art Practice stream, including
calligraphy, landscape, flower-and-bird, and figure, this exhibition presents the learning
outcome of their first academic year. Responding to the profound spirits of traditional
Chinese art, artworks were created with new artistic concepts and personal style through
exploring a broad range of ideologies and techniques.
Seek– seeking breakthrough and new direction. Techniques and concepts in modern art
creation and design were utilized to make new discovery and interpretations to the
traditional ‘ink-and-wash’.
Ink – read as calligraphy and ink. Whether in painting or calligraphy, ink is the soul of
Chinese art. Exploring different forms of lines, spaces, and images, this exhibition reveals
how the traditional spirit of ink were interpreted and transmitted by artists to situate
themselves in the context of contemporary.
Image – indicating form, concept, and soul. Both calligraphy and ink wash painting have
their own aesthetic principles on form. The imagery should be connected to the nature or
the surroundings in order to convey one’s own feeling and thoughts. ‘Image’ comes from
our heart, and the environment changes following the heart. With the unique vitality of
ink-and-wash, this exhibition takes its viewers on a special spiritual journey into the world
of ink.
