“Seek, Ink, Image” – Master of Arts in Fine Arts Year One Exhibition (Chinese Art Practice)

Featuring artworks from 14 master students of the Chinese Art Practice stream, including
calligraphy, landscape, flower-and-bird, and figure, this exhibition presents the learning
outcome of their first academic year. Responding to the profound spirits of traditional
Chinese art, artworks were created with new artistic concepts and personal style through
exploring a broad range of ideologies and techniques.
Seek– seeking breakthrough and new direction. Techniques and concepts in modern art
creation and design were utilized to make new discovery and interpretations to the
traditional ‘ink-and-wash’.
Ink – read as calligraphy and ink. Whether in painting or calligraphy, ink is the soul of
Chinese art. Exploring different forms of lines, spaces, and images, this exhibition reveals
how the traditional spirit of ink were interpreted and transmitted by artists to situate
themselves in the context of contemporary.
Image – indicating form, concept, and soul. Both calligraphy and ink wash painting have
their own aesthetic principles on form. The imagery should be connected to the nature or
the surroundings in order to convey one’s own feeling and thoughts. ‘Image’ comes from
our heart, and the environment changes following the heart. With the unique vitality of
ink-and-wash, this exhibition takes its viewers on a special spiritual journey into the world
of ink.
