Born and brought up in Fuzhou, a southeastern city in Mainland China. I got my BA in Cultural Anthropology from University of Xiamen and also MA in Cultural Anthropology from Renmin University of China. For my BA thesis, my research is about educational desire and practice of migrant children in Xiamen. It concentrates on how the desire of individuals towards the future is shaped by the macro-mechanism, including the national, historical and cultural backgrounds and how it presents in their practice in their daily life, and causes what kinds of structural tension and conflicts. As for my MA project, I did fieldwork in a non-government Orphanage which uses simulated family pattern in Southern part of China. I seek to examine the “Institutionalized Family” -a special unit mixing the family with the institution- in a foreign orphanage which used the simulated family pattern to foster orphans of a poor county in South China. In this study, my question is whether it is possible to simulate a family within the institution – a foreign and Christian orphanage in this example – and how the family is institutionalized. Now I continue working with this orphanage as my PhD program to explore and learn more and my interested area is about childhood, motherhood, care work, new kinship studies in contemporary China.
