Title: Interethnic dynamics in the Inle Lake area, Southern Shan State (Myanmar [Burma]) : How does it work?

Speaker: Frederic PAIN, Laboratoire des Langues et Civilisations à Tradition Oral, LACITO – CNRS, Paris

Zoom Meeting: ID 765-199-345
https://cuhk.zoom.us/j/765199345

Date: 20 March 2020

Time: 1:00-2:30 pm

This seminar will address the topic of which cultural tools (linguistic and otherwise) are used in order to index particular ethnic identifications in a plural ethnic environment. It will analyse how the socio-cultural landscape around the lake was restructured (though predicated upon the same common cultural framework) after the 1962 coup in Burma and how technical choices of phonetic markers in specific interactional context can have important ramifications in the way each ethnic group in the Inle region legitimises its position within the ethnic dynamics; in other words, a close look at the particular element of social agency (the iterational element of conversational agency) will be addressed as an important element of ethnicisation processes around Inle Lake.

Frederic PAIN is adjunct research fellow at the Laboratoire des Langues et Civilisations à Tradition Oral, LACITO – CNRS, Paris. He has written several papers on linguistic and anthropological topics dealing with Southeast Asia and Taiwan.
